Changing an Image to a Sketch with Photoshop

on Thursday 27 June 2013

An image can be changed into a sketch. See the original image on the left and its 'sketch' on the right. The sketch is can be useful for a printout or to give to the kids to color. Any image will do. Let me show you how.

Step 1 : Open the image you wish to convert into a sketch.

Step 2 : Duplicate the image.

Step 3 : The image has been duplicated. You can see this in the Layers/Channels/Path pallete.

Step 4 : With the Background copy selected go to Image>Adjustments>Desaturate. This will desaturate the Background Copy Layer.

Step 5 : The Background Copy has been desaturated. There is no color left in the image.

Step 6 : Duplicate the Background Copy. To duplicate it follow Step 3. The Background copy 2 layer is now created.

Step 7 : Go to Image>Adjustments>Invert.

Step 8 : This is how it will look after inverting the image.

Step 9 : In the Layers/Channels/Paths palette change the 'Normal' blend to 'Color Dodge' by clicking the drop box as shown above.

Step 10 : This is what the image changes to. Nothing but some dots can be seen.

Step 11 : Now go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur as shown.

Step 12 : When the dialogue box opens drag the slider to the Right or to the Left till you are satisfied with the result.

The finished image. It looks just like a sketch. Have fun.
