Dodge Tool and Burn Tool

on Thursday 27 June 2013

Step 1 : The Burn Tool and Dodge Tool in Photoshop is for darkening any part of an image and the Dodge Tool for lightening it. In this tutorial we wil Dodge and Burn without using the two tools for better effect.

Step 2 : This image which I have opened in Photoshop as you can see is a bit dark. Let's fix that.

Step 3 : First drag the Background layer to the New Layer Button. See the Black arrow. It points to the New Layer Button. This will copy it. As you can see by dragging the Background layer to the New Layer Button a Background copy layer has been created.

Step 4 : Go to Edit>Fill

Step 5 : This dialogue box will open. From the drop down menu choose 50 % Gray and click OK. If you have difficulty in seeing this image click on it to view a larger version.

Step 6 : This is how the image now looks. You cannot see it. It has been covered by the 50 % Fill.
Step 7 : Now change the blend mode to Overlay in the Layer/Channel/Path pallete. Click this image too for viewing a larger version if you have difficulty in reading details.

Step 8 : The image is visible once more.

Step 9 : Click the Brush Tool. At the top lower the Opacity to around 20 to 24 per cent. See arrow.

Step 10 : This is how you access the Brush Tool, if you have forgotten how. Click on it to select it.

Step 11 : Now click on the Zoom Tool. Notice the Two magnifying Glass icons at the top one with the plus and the other with the munis sign. With the plus you Zoom out i.e. make the image details larger and with the minus you zoom in i.e. you see a smaller portion of the image.

Step 12 : Set the Foreground color to White. Now gently brush the petals. You can see the brush tip where I have marked it with a red arrow. The colors are turning brighter.

Step 13 : You can now that the yellow flowers seem brighter as well as the green foliage. It is no longer dark as it was earlier.
Step 14 : Press X on your keyboard. It will change the Foreground color to Black and the Background color to White. Now use the Brush tool (see the black arrow on top) to make the sky darker. I have painted a portion of it as you can see.

The finished image. Go to File>Save As. Save as Jpeg. That's all.
