Creating frames in Photoshop

on Friday 28 June 2013
Ever wondered how to frame your photos in Photoshop. It's easy as pie. Just follow the steps below. The tutorial has turned out to be a trifle long. So I am dividing it into three parts. Do each part one by one and do not rush it.

PART - 1

Step 1 : Open a New White Layer.

Step 2 : Open up a photo like the one above.
Step 3 : Click on the Rectangular Marquee Tool to select it.
Step 4 : Draw a selection like the one above with the Marquee Tool.
Step 5 : Go to Select>Inverse. Step 6 : The selection has been inversed. See above. Step 7 : Go to Edit>Copy

Step 8 : Click on the White Layer.
Step 9 : Go to Edit>Paste.
Step 10 : There you have your frame.
Step 11 : See where the small white hand points to. It's the Add New layer Button. Drag 'Layer 1' (the frame) to the button to duplicate the layer. Do this thrice and you will have -- 'Background', 'Layer 1', 'Layer 1 copy' and 'Layer 1 copy 2' as shown above. Step 12 : Now click on Layer 1. This will make it active i.e. you will be able to work on it. Step 13 : Before working on Layer 1, click off the 'eye' icons on Layer 1 copy and Layer 1 copy 2 as shown above. We are hiding these two layers by clicking off the eye icon. We will need them a little bit later. Step 14 : Keeping ALT pressed on the keyboard drag to resize the frame proportionately. Drag it to anywhere you please. I have dragged it to the bottom right. Step 15 : Click on the Move Tool.
Step 16 : This dialogue box opens. Click 'Apply'. Step 17 : Now click the 'eye' icon back on in 'Layer 1 copy'. Step 18 : The second frame is now visible.
Step 19 : Repeat steps 14, 15 and 16 to drag and resize the second frame anywhere you wish on the white layer. I have dragged it to the bottom left. Remember to click 'Apply' as in Step 15 and 16. Step 20 : Go to Edit>Transform>Rotate. Step 21 : When you click at the edge of the frame a small bent arrow will appear. Drag this down or up to rotate the frame to your liking. Step 22 : Now click back the 'eye' icon on 'Layer 1 copy 2' to make the third frame visible. Step 23 : The third frame is visible now.
Step 24 : All three frames are visible now. All you have to do now is open up the photos you want to insert in the frames.

PART - II Step 25 : I will insert this photo into one of the frames. Move the photo over the frame and go to Edit>Transform>Rotate as in Step 19, 20 and 21.
Step 26 : I have dragged the photo over the frame and rotated it. Step 27 : Go to Edit>Transform>Scale

Step 28 : I have positioned the photo over the frame.
Step 29 : Click on the Move Tool or any other tool.
Step 30 : This dialogue box opens. Click Apply.
Step 31 : Go to Layer>Arrange>Send to Back
Step 32 : Now I have clicked on Layer 1 copy to select it. This contains the third frame.

Step 33 : Go to Layer>Layer Style>Bevel and Emboss.
Step 34 : When this dialogue box opens just click ok.
Step 35 : This is how the embossed frame looks like.

Step 36 : Following the steps above I have inserted photos in the other two frames also.
PART - III
Step 37 : I have opened a fourth photo now.
Step 38 : I have resized the photo and sent it to the back. (See Step 30).
Step 39 : Go to Image>Adjustments>Hue/Saturation.

Step 40 : This dialogue box opens.
Step 41 : Check the 'Colorize' box at right. Drag the Hue, Saturation and Lightness sliders as shown.
Step 42 : This is how the total composition looks like now.
Step 43 : The photo we are working on is in Layer 5.

Step 44 : Now CTRL+Click where shown.

Step 45 : You will immediately notice a selection of 'marching ants' as above around the photo after CTRL+Clicking.
Step 46 : Go to Select>Modify>Border.

Sep 47 : This dialogue box opens. I have put the 'Width' as 20 pixels.

Step 48 : Notice that the border or the double selection lines have formed.
Step 49 : Make sure that the Foreground is set to Black and Background to White. The bent arrow switches between the Foreground and Background colors.
Step 50 : Now click the Gradient Tool.

Step 51 : With the Gradient Tool clicked drag from top to bottom diagonally as shown. Go to Layer>Layer Style>Bevel and Emboss as in Step 32 and apply it. Then go to Select>Deselect.
This is the completed composition.
