Letters in Blood

on Friday 28 June 2013
The effect of blood dripping from letters can be created easily in Photoshop.
Step 1 : Open a new white layer and click on the Type Tool, then choose the Horizontal Type tool.

Step 2 : Write your text. I have written mine.

Step 3 : Now click where shown by the arrow the top panel. Just click the tick mark and it will commit the text.

Step 4 : Now CTRL+Click on the layer thumbnail of the Type layer.

Step 5 : CTRL+clicking the layer thumbnail will select the letters. A column of 'marching ants' will show the selection.

Step 6 : Press 'Q' on the keyboard to enter the Quick Mask Mode. Then press CTRL+A to Select All.

Step 7 : Go to Edit>Transform>Rotate 90 degree CW

Step 8 : This will be the effect after rotating the text.

Step 9 : Go to Filter>Stylize>Wind.

Step 10 : The Wind dialogue box opens. Leave the default settings click ok.

Step 11 : Now Press CTRL+F a number of times to increase the 'drip' as shown above. I have pressed CTRL+F thrice.

Step 12 : Go to Edit>Transform>Rotate 90 degrees CCW

Step 13 : This is the effect you get now.

Step 14 : Press Q on the keyboard and the quick mask disappears.

Step 15 : Now click on the Background layer (red arrow). Then click on the New Layer button (blue arrow). You will find a new layer form above the Backgrond layer and below the Text layer (green arrow). It is Layer 1.
Step 16 : First click on the Foreground Color (A). This will bring up the Color Picker. Next click on the Spectrum in the middle (B) to choose red. Then click on a bright shade of red (C). Click ok in the Color Picker.
Step 17 : Go to Edit>Fill.

Step 18 : The 'drip' has been created.

Step 19 : Press CTRL+D to get rid of the selection.
Step 20 : Now click on the text layer to select it.

Step 21 : Go to Layer>Rasterize>Text.
Step 22 : The text layer has been rasterized. Without rasterising text is not editable.
Step 23 : Now CTRL+click the text layer thumbnail.

Step 24 : The text has been selected by the marching ants.
Step 25 : Now make sure that the Foreground Color is set to Black. Click the Gradient Tool. Then click the side of the Gradient Editor.
Step 26 : Click the Gradient that the small white hand points to.
Step 27 : With the Gradient Tool selected drag down from the top vertically.

This the effect. That is it. You can add any background you like or you may use Harry's Filter, which is a free Photoshop plugin (See here) to create an effect with it.
This is the effect with Harry's Filter.

You can add Bevel and Emboss to the Text layer.
You can also drag another image into the background for effect. It is upto you. That is all.
