Marilyn Manson effect with Photoshop

on Thursday 27 June 2013
Brian Hugh Warner (born January 5, 1969), better known by his stage name Marilyn Manson, is an American musician and artist known for his outrageous stage persona and image as the lead singer of the eponymous band. His stage name was formed from the names of actress Marilyn Monroe and convicted murderer Charles Manson.[1][2] In 2004, the band's hit "Mobscene" was nominated for a Grammy Award for "Best Metal Performance." (from Wikipedia).
I have been asked to show how to create the effect of his face painting in Photoshop.
These are two photos I found of him. Let me see how far I can do this.
I will use this photo to give the effect.

Step 1 : Double Click the Background in the Layers/Channels/Paths pallete.
Step 2 : The New Layer dialogue box opens. Click ok.
Step 3 : The Background has changed to Layer 0.

Step 4 : Click the Pen Tool.
Step 5 : Click a point. Then without releasing the left mouse button drag. You will find two handles emerge.
Step 6 : Now press ALT and click where shown by the red arrow. One of the handles disappear.
Step 7 : Click another point further up with the Pen Tool. Do not let go of the left mouse button. You will see that you be able to bend the line as you please. This takes a little bit of practice.
Step 8 : Now press ALT and click the upper handle. It will disappear. This is how you select with the Pen Tool.
Step 9 : Click another point further up with the Pen Tool. Without letting go of the left mouse button drag and you will be able to align it with a curve. Step 10 : Again click ALT and delete the upper handle. This is how you have to select. (I had posted a tutorial on how to use the Pen Tool. The tutorial is here. )
Step 11 : The selection has been made.

Step 12 : In the Layers/Channels/Paths pallete click Paths.
Step 13 : In the Paths pallette notice the Work Path.
Step 14 : Right Click the Work Path and a drop down appears. From It click Make Selection.

Step 16 : The selection is now visible as a column of 'marching ants'. The selection is not complete as the eyes, hairbrow and lips have to be selected. I will select this with the Pen Tool.
Step 17 : Use the Zoom Tool to zoom in on the eye.
This is the Zoom Tool.
At the top panel you will find the Zoom in and Zoom out functions -- the magnifying glass icons marked with a plus and minus. They are for zooming in and zooming out. You can also us the bracket [ ] keys to zoom in and out.
Step 17 : The eyebrow has been selected.
Step 18 : In the Paths pallete right click the Workpath.
Step 19 : In the Make Selection dialogue box that pops up make sure Substract from Selection is checked. Set the Feather radius at 1 pixel. Click ok.

Step 39 : Set the Foreground Color to Black.
Step 40 : I have painted around the eyes with the brush tool. Does not look very impressive, does it not.

Step 41 : Lower the Opacity of the Layer.
Step 42 : The opacity has been lowered.
Step 43 : Go to Filter>Liquify.

This is the Move Tool.
Step 56 : Lower the opacity of the lips layer. Here it is the topmost layer or layer 3.

Step 57 : Go to Filter>Liquify.

Step 58 : I have zoomed in on the lips and used the Forward Warp tool to give this effect by giving short strokes with it. Click ok.

And there is the Marilyn Manson Look.
If you want to give one of the eyes a makeover also, then follow these steps.
