Variations Tool in Photoshop

on Thursday 27 June 2013

Sometimes the colors seem a trifle bright and you do not have much time on your hands to make color correction. What do you do? Pass it up? No, you use the Variations tool.

Step 2 : Here's how you acess the Variations Tool -- Go to Image>Adjustments>Variations as shown.

Step 3 : This dialogue box opens.

Step 4 : See the arrow. It points to midtones. This is the default setting and you should leave it untouched.

Step 5 : Notice the 'Original' and 'Current Pick' The picture has too much red. See the larger image at the top of the tutorial. Notice the images below. More Green. more Yellow, more magenta etc etc. How do you correct the color? You can click on more blue or the other options, even double click it or triple click it to get the appropriate color.

Step 6 : Now notice the three panels on the right - - 'Lighter', 'Current Pick' and 'Darker'. These are to be used is necessary to make the image lighter or darker after the color correction if needed.

Step 7 : Notice the arrow on top right. There is a slider there. It is set midway between Fine and Coarse. That should also be left untouched.
Now see the arrow at the bottom left. It points to More Blue. I will click it twice and see what happens.

Step 8 : After clicking the More Blue twice this is what I get. I am not going to use Step 6 here because it is not needed.
The variations that you make will depend on your image. You must experiment till you get the image just right. That's all. And, isn't it easy! You can do it both in Photoshop7 or Photoshop CS2.
