Brushes Filters Make a Poster

Let's design a poster using brushes.
Step 1 : Open a white document in Photoshop.

Step 2 : In the Layers/Channels/Paths pallette double click the Background. This will lead the New Layer dialogue box to open (shown on left). Click ok.
Step 3 : The Background has changed to Layer 0 (zero) in the Layers/Channels/Paths pallete. Now we are set.
Step 4 : Click the Foreground color (red arrow) and the Color Picker (blue arrow) opens.
Step 5 : I have clicked on the green in the Spectrum to select a shade of green.
Step 6 : I have clicked a shade of green (red arrow). The selected color is shown in the box at the top (blue arrow).
Step 7 : Now click the white background color. You can see that the color in the box at the top is also white. Step 8 : I have now clicked the yellow in the Spectrum and chosen a shade of yellow. The color in the box has also changed to yellow. Click ok in the Color Picker.
Step 9 : Note the changed Foreground and Background colors.
Step 10 : Click the Gradient Tool. Click the Linear Gradient shown on top.
Step 11 : With the Gradient Tool selected drag down diagonally from the top left to bottom right. Step 12 : The Gradient has been applied to the white layer.
Step 13 : Go to Filter>Distort>Wave.
Step 14 : In the Wave dialogue box first change the default Sine to Square (highligted in yellow). Set the number of generators to 20 (highligted in mauve) and lastly make sure that Repeat Edge Pixels is selected (highlighted in green). Click ok. Step 15 : This is how the background now looks like.
Step 16 : Press CTRL+SHIFT+N to bring up the New Layer dialogue box. Click ok. Note that Layer 1 has been formed above Layer 0 in the Layers/Channels/Paths pallete.
Step 17 : Click the Elliptical Marquee Tool to select it.

Step 18 : Keep the SHIFT key on the ketboard and draw a circular election with the Elliptical Marquee Tool. It will be a perfect circle. See above.
Step 19 : Go to Edit>Fill. Note that the foreground is green as was done in Step 5 and 6.
Step 20 : The Fill dialogue opens. Note that the Use (highligted in yellow) is set at Foreground color. Click ok.
Step 21 : The circular selection has been filed with the Foreground Color i.e. Green.
Step 22 : Go to Select>Modify>Border Step 23 : The Border Selection dialogue box opens. I have put 20 pixels for the border. Click ok.
Step 24 : You can see the border has been formed. Step 25 : Select the Gradient Tool again. The Foreground and Background colors remained unchanged.
Step 26 : Draw from the right bottom to the top left with the Gradient Tool. Then press CTRL+D to deselect
Step 27 : In the Layers/Channels/Paths press CTRL and click the layer thumbnail as shown by the red arrow.

Step 28 : A selection has again appeared.
Step 29 : Go to Select>Modify>Contract.
Step 30 : When the Contract selection dialogue box has opened I have set the contaction by 20 pixel. Step 31 : The selection has contracted.
Step 32 : Click the Gradient Tool again. Step 33 : With the Gradient Tool selected drag up as shown.
Step 34 : This is how the image looks now. Press CTRL+D to deselect. Step 35 : Go to Layer>Layer Style>Bevel and Emboss.
Step 36 : In the Bevel and emboss dialogue box, first change the Technique to Chisel Hard from the drop down menu. Then change the Gloss Counter to Ring Double (the one you can see) from the drop down menu. Check the Anti-Alias. Now drag the Size and Dept sliders a little to the right. Lastly drag the Soften slider till you are satisfied with the effect. Click ok.
Step 37 : This is how the poster now looks like.
Step 38 : Press CTRL+SHIFT+N to form a new layer. -- Layer 2.

Step 39 : Again select the Eliptical Marquee Tool.
Step 40 : Keep the SHIFT key pressed while drawing the selection and then use the Move Tool to place the selection roughly in the middle.
This is the Move Tool.
Step 41 : Go to Edit>Fill. Step 42 : The Fill dialogue box opens. Under Foreground Color. See above. Click ok. Then Press CTRL+D to get rid of the selection.
Step 43 : This is how the poster looks.
Step 44 : Go to Layer>Layer Style>Bevel and Emboss. Step 45 : When the Bevel and Emboss dialogue box opens change the Technique to Chisel Hard and Gloss Counter to Ring Double. Check the Anti-Alias and the drag the Size and Depth sliders a little till your are satisfied.
Step 46 : This is how the poster looks like.
Step 47 : Press CTRL+SHIFT+N to create a new layer. Label it Type.
Step 48 : Go to the Type Tool and select Horizontal Type Mask Tool.
Step 49 : Click where shown to reveal the drop down box which contains all the fonts on the computer. I have selected Blazed which I have downloaded from the internet. It is free. You can download it here.
On the download page look for the zip file as shown above. Click it to download. If you have a popup blocker, switch it off or it may prevent you from downloading.
Step 50 : As soon as you Type with the Horizontal Mask Tool the image will turn reddish. It is the mask which makes it so.

Step 51 : The letters have been typed in.
For setting the size of the type and alignment look at the top panel after clicking the Type Tool. The red arrow points to the size. You can just enter a value for the size of the font. If you click there it will reveal a drop down box which has sizes till 72 points. But you need not set the font from it. Just enter the value in the box as I have done. The blue arrow points to the alignment. I have chosen centre alignment.
Step 52 : Click the Move Tool

Step 53 : You can see that the mask has disappeared and the outline of the letters are visible.
Step 54 : Click the Gradient Tool and then the Gradient Editor.
Step 55 : The Gradient Editor opens.

Step 56 : I have clicked one of the Gradients. You can use any one you like. Click ok.
Step 57 : With the Gradient Tool drag down from top to bottom as shown.
Step 58 : The Gradient has been applied to the letters.
Step 59 : Press ALT and drag one of the corner handles. This will make the letters bigger while maintaining proportion.
Step 60 : Click the Move Tool or any other Tool and this dialogue box will open. Click Apply.
Step 61 : Go to Layer>Layer Style>Bevel and Emboss.

Step 62 : When the Bevel and Emboss dialogue box opens change the Technique to Chisel Hard from the drop down menu and the Gloss Counter to Ring Double from the dropdown menu. Check the Anti-Alias. Now drag the Size and Depth Sliders. When you are satisfied check the Contour shown by the red arrow at left.
Step 63 : This is how the poster now looks.
Step 64 : Go to Layer>Layer Style>Stroke
Step 65 : When the Layer Style dialogue box opens click the red color box to bring up the Color Picker.

Step 66 : Now click on the White on the top left as shown. Notice that the top half of the color box changes to white. Click ok in the Color Picker.
Step 67 : In the Stroke dialogue box let the Size remain at the default 3 pixel. Click ok.
Step 68 : This is how the poster looks with the Stroke added.

Step 69 : Go to to Layer>Layer Style>Inner Glow.
Step 70 : In the Inner Glow dialogue box change the Size, the Contour and tick the Anti-Aliased. The blue arrow points to the Color Picker, should you want to give a different color to the inner glow instead of the default yellow. Click ok.

Step 71 : Go to Layer>Layer Style>Outer Glow.
Step 72 : Go to Layer>Layer Style>Outer Glow.

Step 73 : In the Outer Glow dialogue box drag the Size slider and Spread slider to the right a little at a time until you are satisfied with the result. Change the Contour to Half Round from the drop down box. The blue arrow points to the Color Picker, should you want to change the color of the Outer Glow. Here I am leaving it at the default yellow. Click ok.
Step 74 : This is how the poster looks after adding the Outer Glow.
Step 75 : I have added some more text after making a new layer by pressing CTRL+SHIFT+N as shown earlier in this tutorial and added an Outer Glow. And, I know I have spelt Kareena with two 'R's.
Step 76 : Go to Edit>Transform>Rotate.
Step 76 : Hover the cursor near a corner of the text. You will find a small bent arrow appear. With this you can rotate the text as shown.
Step 78 : I have made another new layer by pressing CTRL+SHIFT+N and added a date to the poster.
