Text in Photoshop - Part 1

on Friday 28 June 2013

This will teach you how to add text to your compositions. Since there is a lot to explain, I will post it in parts.

Step 1 : This is the Text Tool. Choose the Horizonatl Type Tool.

Step 2 : As soon as you click the Text Tool, the top panel will change. You will find (A) is where the fonts are found, (B) is where you set the size of the fonts. Just enter a value in the box for setting the font size. (C) is for setting the color of the font. Let us examine them in turn.

Step 3 : Click where the red arrow points to select the font. A drop down window will appear s above. Here I have chosen Impact which can be seen at the top. Click to select a font.

Step 4 : This is where you set the fonts. If you click at the size you will find a drop down window which will give you the size of the fonts. But you can just as well set the size by entering a value. For example the font size has been set at 30 pts (point).

Step 5 : This is dropdown window you get if you click where the white arrow points to. Here a maximum size of 72 pts are shown. Do not bother about it, you can set any size by entering the size you want in the box at the top.

Step 6 : The black box is from where you set the color. Let us see how the color of the font can be changed.

Step 7 : Choose a color from the column in the middle (red arrow) by clicking it. Then you can choose the shade from the large box at left (light blue arrow). Click ok after you have chosen the color.

Step 8 : I have clicked a blue color in the column in the middle (red arrow). Then click a shade in the large box at left (light blue arrow). Note when your color is selected the box at the top (green arrow) or its top half changes to color you have picked. Click ok.

Step 9 : Note that the text color at the top has changed to the shade picked.

Step 10 : Now click the Type Tool. Note that the Foreground color has changed to the color I have selected.

Step 11 : Draw out a selection where your text will go with the Text Tool i.e. with the cursor.

Step 12 : The Text has been added.

Step 13. Click on the Marquee Tool

Step 14 : The selection has disappeared. You have to note once more thing.

Step 15 : In the Layers/Channels/Paths pallette note that the icon with the 'T' is the text layer. A text layer is always in a new layer. The 'Background' is the white layer I have opened to write the text on. This is the first lesson.
The next lesson is here.
