Curve Tool in Photoshop

on Thursday 27 June 2013

Step 1 : You can correct color in Photoshop with the Curves Tool.

It's easy to do and allows you to experiment till you are just satisfied.

Step 2 : Go to Image>Adjustments>Curves as shown here. This will bring the tool up.

Step 3 : This is the Curves Tool or its dialogue box.

Step 4 : Click the dropdown box. By default it will be set to RGB. The options are Red, Green and Blue.

Step 5 : Here I have chosen blue from the drop down box as there is a lot of blue in the image. I have then dragged the diagonal line that you see across the grid upwards a little.

Step 6 : In the earlier step the blue has become a bit too deep. Let's correct it. I have now chosen green from the drop down box and again pushed the diagonal line a bit upwards. The shade of blue looks better, while the green of the trees looks brighter.

Step 7 : I have now chosen red and dragged the diagonal line down a bit. This decreases the red in the image.

Step 8 Lastly, I have chosen RGB and again dragged the diagonal line a bit.
The color now acquires deeper tones.

Step 9 : Now look at the eyedropper tools. The left one is to Set Black Point and the right for setting the white point. The one in the middle is used in case of black and white images. Here I have chosen the Set White Point with which I will click on a light part of the image.

Step 10 : I have used the Set White Point to click on the light part of the image at point marked 'A' and Set Black Point at 'B', at a darker part of the image.

Step 11 : The finished image. Please remember that there are no hard and fast rules. Set the parameters according to the image you choose. The red, green and blue will need to be decreased or increased according to your image. Go ahead and experiment.
