Turning a photo into a sketch in Photoshop

on Friday 28 June 2013
You can turn any photo into a sketch in Photoshop in a few simple steps. The result will be much better then that achieved by photoshop filters which also do not come free. Just follow the steps and you too can turn a photo into a sketch in a jiffy. So here goes.
Step 1 : I have opened this image in photoshop which I will turn into a sketch. You can open any photo you please.
Step 2 : Go to Layers>Duplicate layer to duplicate the layer. There are many ways to duplicate a layer. This is one of them.
Step 3 : This dialogue box pops up. Click ok.
Step 4 : Notice that in Layers/Channels/Paths pallette the 'Background' is the original photo and the copy that we just made is 'Background copy'.
Step 5 : Go to Image>Adjustments>Desaturate as shown above. This will desaturate the layer.

Step 6 : This is the desaurated photo. Desaturated means all trace of color has been removed.
Step 7 : Now drag the 'Background copy' to the New Layer Button (the icon like the folded bit of paper). This will duplicate the layer. This is another way to duplicate a layer.

Step 8 : Notice the 'Background copy 2'. It is the duplicate layer that you just made.

Step 9 : Press CTRL+I on your keyboard. The photo will be inverted. i.e. the back will turn to white and white to black like the negative of a photo.

Step 10 : Now click the blend options. It is set to 'Normal' by default. When you click it a pop up of the blend modes will appear. Click 'Color Dodge'.
Step 11 : This is how my photo now looks. It has turned completely white. Depending on the image you use, a few grains or dots might also be visible. That is normal.
Step 12 : Now go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur as shown. Step 13 : This dialogue box opens. See the slider shown by the blue arrow. Move it from left to right and notice the change in your image. If you thing the effect is tto much drag it back. How much of the sketch effect you give will depend solely to your liking.

This is how my 'sketch' looks like.

Another variation of the 'sketch'. You should experiment with the slider to determine how much of the effect you give to your sketch. That's all.
