History Brush Tool

on Thursday 27 June 2013
Photoshop keeps a record of changes you make to your images. The History palette is to go back to a particular point in the development of the image. The History Brush tool provides an artistic, free-form way of revealing a previous state of an image. This tool can be used for a dramatic effect -- restoring the color in a just desaturated image.
Step 1 : I have opened this photo in Photoshop. The first thing is to desaturate it.

Step 2 : Go to Image>Adjustments>Desaturate. You can also use the shorthcut SHIFT+CTRL+U.
The desaturated image.

Step 3 : Click on the Zoom Tool to zoom in one the image. Look at the top panel you will find two icons like magnifying glasses with a plus and minus sign. These are for zooming in (plus) and zooming out (minus). You can also use the bracket keys [ ] for zooming in and out.
Step 4 : I have zoomed in on the image to see in detail what I am doing.
Step 5 : Click on the History Brush tool to select it.

Step 6 : You can see the color being restored as I paint with the History Brush.
Step 7 : After finishing a portion go to the Navigator at the top right. You can see the portion that is visible between the red box. Hover your cursor and a small white hand will appear. Use it to reveal more of the image.
Another part of the car -- the front -- has been painted by the History Brush. This is how it is done.

Step 8 : The completed image.
Here is another example.
The desaturated image.
I am using the History Brush on the lips after zooming in.
I have restored the color in the lips and cigarette.
