Lighting Soft Focus

on Thursday 27 June 2013
We will use a technique to make the light apear focussed as we wish it to be on a photo to draw attention to a particular portion. Here is how we go about it. You can do it in any version of Photoshop.
Step 1 : I have opened this image in Photoshop.
Step 2 : Click the New Adjustment Layer button.

Step 3 : From the pop up click on Curves.
Step 4 : The Curves dialogue box opens.
Step 5 : Drag the diagonal down to the point as shown. Click ok.
The image becomes dark.

Step 6 : Click on the Lasso Tool to select it.
Step 7 : I am drawing out a selection with the Lasso Tool on the areas I would like the light to fall and make more prominent.
Step 8 : The selection is complete.

Step 9 : Make sure that the Foreground color is set to Black.
Step 10 : Press SHIFT+F5. The Fill dialogue box opens. Make sure Use is set to Foreground Color. Click ok.
Step 11 : This is how the image looks. The selection is still visible. Press CTRL+D.
The selection disappears.

Step 12 : Go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur.
Step 13 : The Gaussian Blur dialogue box opens. I hve set the Radius at 25 pixels. There is nothing hard and fast about it. It will depend on your image. You will be able to see the effect as you drag the slider. Click ok when you are satisfied.

This is the effect I have got.
Step 14 : Lower the opacity of the layer. I have reduced it to 75 %.
This is my finished image. That is all try it out.
